Middle-aged and the elderly Engage in Mobile Web Browsing Training Courses

In hope of narrowing the digital gap in Tainan, the city government designed training courses on net-surfing particularly for senior citizens. On Dec. 1st Mayor Lai hosted a press conference about the result of “2016 Citizen Mobile Web Browsing” and awarded participants certificate of completion.

When addressing, Mayor Lai indicated that there are three pervasive gaps in Taiwan. The first one is the urban-rural discrepancy, such as differences between southern and the more developed northern Taiwan. Meanwhile the contrast is reversed in Tainan, where the population centralized in the south of Zengwun River with higher economic prosperities. The second one is the generation gap, where each generation features their unique characteristic but might not uphold to current developments. Last but not least, unequal wealth distribution, which is an important equity issue the city government should resolve, deprives citizens from well-designed but payment-required courses.

Mayor Lai further mentioned that if the potential of citizens could be inspired, our city might in turn move forward progressively. Thus, he appreciated that Tainan Computer Union Association was willing to promote wireless Internet usage among citizens and provide training courses for those in need.

The RDEC indicated that the efforts devoted in distance learning courses designed for citizens above 40 and new immigrants to minimize the digital gap and to balance regional development, are rather popular and successful. Hence, the necessity for IT service and mobile devices application is growing among the senior citizens.
